Tue 18th Jul 2023 - Everards appoints Greene King’s Andy Wilson as new MD
Everards appoints Greene King’s Andy Wilson as new MD: Leicestershire brewer and retailer Everards has appointed Andy Wilson as its new managing director. Wilson, who is currently managing director of Greene King’s destination food brands division, will succeed Stephen Gould, who previously announced plans to step down by March 2025. Everards chairman Julian Everard said: “Earlier this year we shared that Stephen was looking towards his future with plans to step down and, therefore, we were about to start the search for our next managing director. We are delighted that after a thorough selection process, we are pleased to share that Andy will be joining us as Stephen’s successor. Andy is currently managing director of Greene King’s destination food brands division and will be leaving Greene King after ten fantastic years with it, following senior positions in Caffe Nero and JD Wetherspoon. We think Andy will be a great fit with Everards as well as Everards offering him another chapter in his varied career across grocery, pubs, hotels, and coffee. Andy will join us in February 2024 and will initially work alongside Stephen as joint managing director to create a smooth transition until Stephen becomes a non-executive director on our board. During this transition Andy is excited to be learning more about all aspects of our business; supporting our outstanding independent business owners, brewing and logistics, and delighting customers at Everards Meadows. We are looking forward to welcoming Andy. We are humbled by all the high-class people who wanted to join Everards and are pleased to find such a great person to lead our next chapter.” Meanwhile, Greene King has appointed Jodie Tate, who will join Greene King in October from Asda, to replace Wilson. Tate has spent the last five years leading central operations, and for the last few months she has also been responsible for more than 300 stores across the north of the country. Prior to Asda, Tate was at Sainsbury’s, starting on its graduate programme and progressing through the business in a variety of different roles until she left in 2018 when she was zone managing director for the north. Nick Mackenzie, chief executive of Greene King, said: “Andy has been a dedicated member of our team, consistently demonstrating a genuine commitment to our values and goals and has a passion for people and customer service. I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the positive impact Andy has made at Greene King and we wish him all the success in the future. Over the last few months, we have been able to consider the appointment of a successor to build on the strong work and foundations that have already been laid and I’m delighted Jodie will be joining us. She has fantastic experience in leading complex, multi-site operations teams, and brings with her over 20 years’ experience in retail. I know she will bring passion and energy to the role and will be pivotal in bringing our brands to life with a focus on providing outstanding guest experiences.” Greene King is working towards having women make up 50% of its senior management roles by 2030 – an ambition set by its executive board, which forms part of its wider diversity and inclusion strategy and is supported by Greene Sky, its women’s focused employee-led inclusion group. Currently 33% of senior management roles at Greene King are filled by women. Everards and Greene King both feature in the Propel Turnover & Profits Blue Book, the latest edition of which was sent to Premium subscribers on Friday (14 July). The Blue Book ranks companies by turnover, profit and profit conversion, listing directors’ earnings for the past five years. Companies can now have an unlimited number of people receive access to Propel Premium for a year for £995 plus VAT – whether they are an operator or a supplier. Knoops appoints new CEO: Luxury hot chocolate shop Knoops has appointed executive chairman William Gordon-Harris as chief executive. He will continue driving the business’ rapid expansion, having seen 78% year-on-year revenue growth in the last 12 months. Following a period as executive chairman since 2019, Gordon-Harris will now focus on the growth and skill set of the organisation’s senior management “so Knoops can optimise the success to date and accelerate the brand scale up both in the UK and internationally”. Gordon-Harris replaces Tori Nunn, who stepped down earlier this month after four years in the role. Knoops has more than doubled the number of stores from five to 11 in the past year with a further nine in the pipeline over the next ten months. Revenue is forecast to grow by a further 110% in the next 12 months. Gordon-Harris first discovered Knoops founder Jens Knoop in his eponymous location in Rye, East Sussex, in 2018, and approached him about building a brand for barista chocolate drinks “in the same way Starbucks did for coffee in-store, followed by Nespresso for coffee at home”. They joined forces and Gordon-Harris has led the rapid expansion of the store network and online retail offering since then, with plans to open more than 120 sites in the UK, and 3,000 sites globally within the next seven years. The company’s opening in Cross Street, Manchester, earlier this year was its biggest so far. Gordon-Harris said: “As chief executive, I will accelerate our rapid expansion. Knoops is one of the most exciting omnichannel hospitality businesses in the UK. In 2023 we continue to build on the success to date as we create this category with its vast addressable market and become the global brand leader.”
